The valley of the Vara is the only longitudinal valley in Liguria, stretching from near La Spezia to the northwest, parallel to the coast as far as the region above Sestri Levante, in the back country of the Ligurian Riviera. A Roman street can be traced to follow the line of the valley, Tavarone may have been a Roman tavern.
The upper valley of the Vara sparks significant naturalistic and archeological interest (Maissana-Valle Lagorana, Cassego). Nothing is urbanized here - the perfect spot for everyone that seeks relaxation and quiet away from the touristy areas. Today, the valley is also visited for canoeing or hang-gliding.
Marked hiking trails lead through beech and acorn woods, and the Ligurian altitude trail, the Alta Via dei Monti Líguri, can also be reached from here (the Monte Gottero being one of the most impressive elevations of the Ligurian Appenines). The mediterranea sea is near, the cinqueterre and the bay of La Spezia just around the corner, the drive to Genua leads past Portofino, Rapallo and Camogli. Sarzana and the Magra river outlet, the Lunigiana (again, with interesting archeological findings) or the marble pits of Carrara are all just "quattro passi" (two steps) away.
The community of Varese Lígure, which is the central town of the valley, has initiated a remarkable ecological development some ten years ago that has meanwhile spread out into the entire valley. One likes to call oneself the"La valle del biologico" here; in the upper part of the valley, the Alta val the Vara, especially, the agricultural production is meticulously carried out and controlled according to organic standards.
Cheese, salami and meat with local quality seals, mushrooms, berries and honey, each from its own "sagra" (festival)...
